Spain Welcomed a Record April in Tourism: What 9.1 Million Guests and 11.7 Billion Euros in Spending Mean
Spanish tourism entered the 2026 high season with a new record: in April, the country was visited by over 9 million international tourists, and their spending reached nearly 11.7 billion euros. For travelers, this is a signal not only of the destination's popularity but also of greater competition for hotels, convenient flights, transfers, and tickets in the most popular regions.
The National Statistics Institute of Spain published preliminary FRONTUR and EGATUR data for April 2026 on June 2. They show that the country received 9.054 million international tourists, 5.2% more than in April 2025. For the first four months of the year, the number of foreign tourists approached 26.6 million, which is 3.4% more than for the same period last year.
Spending grew even more noticeably. In April, international tourists left 11.686 billion euros in Spain, 7.4% more than a year ago. From January to April, total spending reached 36.703 billion euros, adding 6.7% in annual terms. The Spanish agency EFE, referring to the same INE data, noted that both the number of arrivals and the volume of spending were the highest for April in the entire statistical series.
What Exactly the New Data Showed
April statistics are important because of the calendar: in 2026, Easter travels fell in this month, and for Spain, this is one of the first big tests before the summer peak. The result was strong not only in terms of the number of guests but also in the structure of demand. The average spending per tourist was 1,291 euros, 2.1% more than in April 2025. The average daily spending grew to 189 euros, adding 1.4%.
The largest market by number of arrivals remained the United Kingdom: nearly 1.7 million British tourists in April, 2.7% more than last year. France provided about 1.3 million tourists with a growth of 5.1%, while approximately 1.2 million guests arrived from Germany, but this is 9.1% less than in April 2025. For the first four months of the year, among the main markets, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany also stood out, although the French and German markets in cumulative dynamics were weaker than the overall indicator.
In terms of spending, the structure is slightly different. In April, the largest share of tourist spending came from travelers from the United Kingdom, Germany, and France. At the same time, spending by British tourists grew by 4.7%, French by 12.7%, and German spending decreased by 8.7%. This is an important detail for the market: not every increase in arrivals automatically means an equal increase in revenue, and for hotels, airlines, and local businesses, the quality of demand, trip duration, and the actual budget of the tourist are becoming increasingly important.
Where Demand Was Strongest
The April flow was very uneven across regions. Catalonia became the main destination of the month with a share of 20.8% of all international tourists. This was followed by Andalusia with 16.5% and the Balearic Islands with 15.2%. In annual terms, Catalonia received 7.7% more tourists, Andalusia 6.9% more, and the Balearic Islands 1.4% more.
If looking at spending, the leaders of April were Catalonia, Andalusia, and the Community of Madrid. Catalonia's share of spending was 19%, Andalusia's 16%, and Madrid's 15.7%. The growth in spending in Madrid was particularly noticeable: plus 15.5% compared to April 2025. In Catalonia, spending grew by 10.8%, and in Andalusia by 8.3%.
For practical planning, this means that the most famous entry points into the country will continue to be congested. Tourists flying through Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD), Barcelona Airport (BCN), Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP) or Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) should allow more time for transfers, luggage, transport rental, and the journey to the city or resort. During periods of peak demand, even a slight flight delay can quickly turn into a problem with late check-in or a missed intercity transfer.
Why Spending is Growing Faster Than the Number of Tourists
The key conclusion of April is that revenue from international tourism grew faster than the number of guests. The difference between the 5.2% increase in arrivals and the 7.4% increase in spending shows that the tourist check remains under pressure from prices and is simultaneously supported by demand for paid services: accommodation, activities, international transport, food, and local experiences.
According to EGATUR data, the largest spending item in April was activities: 21.1% of the total tourist budget, with annual growth of 9.3%. International transport, which was not part of a tourist package, accounted for 20.9% of spending and grew by 5.5%. Accommodation accounted for 17.6% of spending and grew by 11.4%. This well explains why for a traveler, not only the flight ticket or hotel separately becomes more expensive, but the entire trip as a package of solutions.
At the same time, 56.2% of total spending fell on tourists who stayed in hotels. Spending in the hotel segment grew by 2.1%, but spending in non-market housing, including staying in own housing or with relatives and friends, grew by 10.9%. This may indicate a wider geography of trips and that some tourists optimize accommodation, but spend more on transport, food, excursions, and leisure.
What This Means for Travelers in Summer 2026
For Ukrainian and European travelers, the new Spanish data have practical meaning. First, expecting cheap spontaneous trips on the most popular dates is becoming risky. If April already showed record demand, then July, August, and the beginning of September may bring even greater pressure on hotels, apartments, internal flights, train tickets, and transfers.
Second, planning should start with logistics, not just with the choice of a resort. For trips to Barcelona and Catalonia, it is useful to check not only flights but also hotels near Barcelona-El Prat Airport if the arrival is late or the departure is early. For Madrid, which showed strong growth in tourist spending, a practical option could be pre-booking a transfer or taxi from Madrid-Barajas Airport, especially if the route continues by rail or internal flight.
Third, islands and coasts require early booking even when flight tickets still seem available. In the Balearics and Andalusia, a significant part of the demand is concentrated in specific locations, so the bottleneck may not be the flight, but accommodation near the desired beach, car rental, or night transfer after arrival. For Mallorca, it is worth checking hotels near Palma de Mallorca Airport in advance, and for Costa del Sol, transfer options from Malaga Airport.
What Changes for the Tourism Market
For the tourism business, the April figures confirm that Spain remains one of the most resilient destinations in Europe. But record indicators do not mean that the market is growing without limits. In many cities and resort regions, the balance between tourism revenue, the housing market, transport load, and the quality of life for local residents has long been discussed. That is why it is becoming increasingly important not only to increase the number of guests but also to manage flows, seasonality, and spending.
The increase in the share of spending on activities also shows that tourists are buying more than just sun and sea. They spend on museums, events, gastronomy, excursions, city routes, and local experiences. This opens opportunities for less obvious destinations, but at the same time increases competition for quality service. A traveler who pays more expects clear logistics, transparent booking conditions, normal communication during delays, and real value for their money.
Particular attention should be paid to the difference between regions. The Canary Islands remained the largest destination in terms of cumulative spending for the first four months of the year, but in April, the lead in arrivals shifted to Catalonia, and Madrid stood out particularly in terms of spending. This means that the summer season may not just be strong, but more segmented: city trips, beach holidays, islands, event tourism, and short weekend flights will develop at different speeds.
How to Better Plan a Trip to Spain Now
The smartest strategy for summer 2026 is not to postpone basic decisions. First, you should determine the main region of the trip, check several arrival airports, compare the cost of overnight stays, and only then buy tickets. For Catalonia, this could be Barcelona, for Andalusia, Malaga or Seville, for the Valencian coast, Valencia (VLC) or Alicante (ALC), for the Balearic Islands, Palma de Mallorca or Ibiza.
It is also worth having a financial reserve. The average spending of 1,291 euros per tourist does not mean that every trip will cost exactly that: a short city weekend and a two-week family holiday have different economics. But the trend is clear: on-site spending is increasing, and the most expensive often become non-obvious elements - luggage, late transfer, flexible fare, dining in tourist areas, tickets to popular sights, and last-minute accommodation.
For those who want to reduce the budget without losing quality, it is logical to look at June, the second half of September, or less crowded cities near the main tourist centers. Spain has a strong transport network, so sometimes it is cheaper to fly into one airport, stay overnight nearby, and then continue the route by train or car. The main thing is to calculate not only the price of the flight ticket, but the total cost of the route.
Conclusion
The record April showed that Spain is entering the summer of 2026 with very strong international demand. For the country's economy, this is a positive signal, but for travelers, it means the need for earlier and more careful planning. The most popular regions - Catalonia, Andalusia, Madrid, the Balearic and Canary Islands - will remain magnets for tourists, and spending on accommodation, transport, and activities may grow faster than the number of trips themselves.
Therefore, the main practical conclusion is simple: Spain in 2026 remains one of the most attractive destinations in Europe, but the best conditions will be obtained by those who plan the route in advance, check alternative airports, book accommodation without haste, and leave a reserve of time and budget on site.
